چکیده

Mixed Reality (MR) is an enabling technology for a much more interactive and intuitive experience of museum exhibits, that allows museum visitors to interact with pieces of art, without using complex virtual interaction metaphors. But MR applications for the museum domain must cope with a complex area of conflicts, which covers user acceptance, usability, copyright issues and technical feasibility. This paper describes the whole development process of a MR museum guide application for the Guggenheim Museum of contemporary art in Bilbao. An authoring-based production process, tailored to the specific requirements of MR is proposed, and its utilization for the realization of the Guggenheim MR museum guide is described. The presented authoring process is based on the AMIRE toolset, which comprises a set of tools to support the MR specific authoring tasks for authors who are not familiar with MR methodologies. The conventional programming based development process of MR applications is compared with the concepts proposed in this paper, in terms of cost efficiency, development time and maintainability. The problems arisen during the production process, discovered pitfalls and their mitigation are documented and discussed. These lessons learned during the production of the application found a basis for a set of “best practices” for authoring MR applications, especially when applying the MR technology to explore art exhibits.

Far away is close at hand: shared mixed reality museum experiences for local and remote museum companions

This paper discusses the use of a shared mixed reality system that supports co-visiting of museum exhibitions for both on-site and on-line visitors. We briefly present the prototype system that uses wireless communication technologies to combine handheld devices, virtual environments and hypermedia to support a museum visit. We then discuss its use, focusing on the ways that the system shaped t...

Experiencing Personalised Heritage Exhibitions Through Multimodal Mixed Reality Interfaces

This paper presents solutions for both museum exhibitions and mobile guides using multimodal mixed reality interfaces based on open standards that can be highly customisable and intuitive to attract and engage a broad spectrum of users. For indoor exhibitions, some of the most characteristic technologies will be presented to demonstrate how multi-modal presentations and interactions of three-di...

The Use of Models of Space in Mixed-Reality Systems

In this paper we discuss the use of models of space in mixed-reality systems. By model of space we mean a distinguishable geometric or symbolic description associated with a physical space. We outline several types of model that might exist, how they are surveyed or otherwise authored, how they are represented to the users and how the underlying middleware and sensors support them. We show that...

The Use of Spatial Models in Mixed-Reality Systems

In this paper we discuss the use of spatial models in mixed-reality systems. We outline several types of model that might exist, how they are surveyed or otherwise authored, how they are represented to the users and how they are supported by the underlying middleware and sensors. We show that systems often contain numerous “models” of space and that a lot of work goes into maintaining or reifyi...
